A combination ofnoun＋ の (counter). It implies that the noun belongs to some category or group. This includes being a kind of (...), of which there are many different kinds. If there is an appropriate counter, use the counter. If there is none, it can use the general counter 「noun + の一つ」
アンドロイドはスマホのOSの一つだ。 Android is one (of many) types of smartphone operating systems.
トマトはフルーツの一種だ。 tomato is one (of many) in the category of fruits.
彼も家族の一人だ。 He is also a member of this household.
このクレヨンはこのセットの一本だ。 This crayon is one of a set
The "..." one
turns into a pronoun. can be used as a generalised particle, much like もの.
赤いリンゴは甘い。青のは甘くない Red apples are sweet. Green ones are not.
This can also be used with other particles to get a combination particle. This cannot be done with に、は、も、が、を.
図書館での勉強(する) the studying in the library
