means 'relatively (adjective)', or 'a bit (adjective)'.
You're not supposed to use it with 形容動詞, only with形容詞〜 !
今お腹があまり空いていないから、小さめのちょうだい I don't have a lot of space in my stomach right now, so I'd like a smaller one please!
To modify a noun, it needs a の.
あの大き目のお握りを下さい。 I would like that relatively big onigiri please!
